FAQ
Q
Why Graphic Communications?
A
Printing is something I'm passionate about. It's the notion that you can begin with an idea and concept and end with a final, tangible piece. I enjoy working through all of the stages from the design, platemaking, printing, and even cleaning the press. I can see myself working in printing for the rest of my life. I feel that if you find a job that you truly love, you never have to "work" a day in your life. Printing is something that I believe fulfills that for me.
Q
What would you like to get out of this internship?
A
With my last internship, I learned a lot about the pre-press side of the business. It was a great learning experience, and it was something I really enjoyed, but it stopped at sending the plates to be made. I would like an internship that will allow me to spend time working with a job from start to finish. I believe that this will give me a full understanding on how the business operates. I would like to have hands-on experience with everything from selling service and estimating the job to organizing the distribution. I know there is a lot that goes into completing a project and that most companies have specific people specialized in each field to do these tasks. Each person has a lot of experience, advice, and knowledge to share about the process and their role in it. I think that through spending time with them I could gain valuable insight and experience that would prepare me for my future work in the industry.
Q
What are you doing to prepare for an internship?
A
I'm currently working on many things to prepare myself for the industry. Everything from research to on campus jobs to extracurricular activities. I know the importance of finding experienced people, especially in an industry driven by science and craft. You can browse my work from the graphics program to see what I've learned in classes and how that applies to the printing industry. One project that I am currently really excited about is a research project. For this project I am compraing G7 Calibration and ISO Standardization with screen printing. I'll be posting the results, steps, processes, and reviews on this site as the semester progresses. I also have sought out part-time positions on campus to help me gain even more experience. I currently hold two part-time jobs. One job is as a graphic designer for the Charles H. Houston center. I'm also employed by the Sonoco Institute where some of my duties include: content management, administrative assistant, and database management. You will be able to view more of my work in these positions here.
